I’m very excited about the prospect of serving the public in a new role that utilizes my education, my 34 years of public service experience and my track record of innovation in local government service delivery. While Grand Rapids is two-thirds of the way through a taxpayer-funded transformation project, there is much more work to be done, and this project comes with a sense of urgency. Voters funded a GR initiative labeled as Transformation by authorizing a five-year 0.2% increase in the income tax rate in 2010, and we deserve to see a new form of city government emerge from this process.
My experience in regionalization, development of inter-governmental cooperation initiatives, inter-governmental contract negotiations, financial management, rate setting, pension fund management and labor relations, along with my private business ownership experience, qualify me in a unique way to serve as your next Second Ward Commissioner. I promise to continue the GR transformation process and provide leadership to take it to the next level. This is a very important point in time as Grand Rapids, Wyoming and Kentwood begin evaluating regional public service delivery models for a wide range of services.
